Thousands gather to witness the light and shadow effect on the Castillo, the afternoon of the spring equinox. As the sun moves through its arc in the sky, this day of equal day and night, it picks up the shadow of the nine bodies of the pyramid and casts it on the side of the north (north-eastern) staircase, giving the effect that a giant serpent is descending, as the afternoon goes by.
